The Piçarras Special Protection Area is a small area of pseudo-steppe, with a dimension of 2827 hectares, recently classified by national legislation (2008). The soil is mainly used to grow cereals, based on extensive farming in a traditional system of crops rotation, which results in a mosaic of crops, ploughed lands, stubbles and fallow lands. The fallow lands are generally used as pasture for sheep and cattle. There are also holm oak and cork oak groves (montados), scrub forests and olive plantations. This SPA is also characterized by flat extensions of land with small slopes that cover wide low altitude areas (between 100 and 300 m).
The presence of Great Bustard (Otis tarda) and Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) are responsible for the classification of this SPA. This area complements the Castro Verde SPA, therefore the occurrence of Great Bustard movements between the two SPAs is very probable.
